Back at last.

They say that everyone has a book in them. I find that hard to believe as I haven’t even had a blog post in me for over 18 months.

It’s hard to explain why. Certainly after my hernia I was just too worried that something would happen and I just didn’t want to push anything. Any time I did if I felt anything I “rested” for a week.

The weeks piled up, I did train and I finished my A-Z of marathons in April 2022.

In 2020 I had entered an event called Transalba an unsupported ultra cycle race around Scotland. Due to C19 the race did not start until July 2022. I began getting in some very long rides the furthest being over 150 miles which took 14 hours. Feeling ready I was really looking forward to the race.

Unfortunately after 1 day of 130 miles and one of 120 I had to retire with what I thought was a case of Covid. I felt tired and out of sorts for a full week and began to feel better only to succumb again in August 2022! This seemed to be milder but the long lasting effects are still with me. My resting heart rate is up by 10% and any efforts raises my heart rate at a previously unknown speed.

Today, 15th Jan 2023 I took part in the Alpkit gravel series in Edinburgh. A non competitive event which was ideal at my present fitness level.

It was a great day, conditions on the ground were a mix of mud, ice and gravel. I have no idea how many were in the event but I am happy with my time of 3h 53min for the 35.9 miles with 3,175 feet of climb.

Hopefully there is more to come and the next blog will not be 18 months away.
